Unemployment "Benefits"
Folks that are unemployed, or have handled being unemployed at any time within our lives, are aware of the weekly benefit claims we make either by telephone or online breathing using a sigh of relief at the end of the method once the weekly benefit is confirmed. Whew! I will be able to make that car payment or avoid that "shut off" notice in the utility company.
My day to file for the claim was on Wednesday between 7am and 6pm. I was at my computer at 7am. There was something about being first-in-line that provided me with an extra boost of confidence that the claim would be accepted (should the State ran out of money) and paid that next day. Friday was pay-day! The mailman was my mate on Friday. I could not help but hum during my head the background music from "Please Mr. Postman".
One fine Wednesday I hit the wrong radio button about the questionnaire, attempted to return and proper it, hit a bad button to return, and also got locked-out of the site. I do believe I have to have invented an expletive or two. I spent the subsequent three hours on the telephone just looking to get through to an individual in the unemployment office or risk not getting my much-needed check into Friday. You might think the amount of anxiety was a sign of a giant amount of cash that might t be coming my way. Funny how that works well when you are unemployed. There seems to be an inverse proportion: the smaller the amount; the higher the anxiety when that amount is at jeopardy.

Yep, Unemployment Benefits, or Unemployment Insurance Benefits as the formal name would indicate, is kind of like collecting life insurance while still maintaining a pulse because anyone collecting knows well why these benefits are truly a life-line between abject poverty and merely making it. Recently, though, it dawned on me after being able to play ball with my kids at 4:00pm after they arrived back from soccer practice that although we have been dreadfully knowledgeable about Unemployment Benefits, I do believe we very often lose sight of the advantages of Unemployment. Prior to being unemployed I used to be working the final five-years 14 hours per day, six . 5 days per week,and when I had been home I was beyond exhausted and often just collapsed in to the fetal position. I ended spending time with my spouse and youngsters. I barely saw them aside from interacted with them like a husband and father should. I finished coaching little league when i simply did not have enough time and barely showed up to their games. I really didnt know who their teachers were and until there was clearly a problem of significance, I had no clue how they were performing in class. No school plays. No Parent-Teacher conferences. The phrase for anyone times was "No"! There was simply "No" time! I really didnt know the things they ate for supper and the kinds of snacks they enjoyed. I was singularly focused.
What I have started to realize is always that while Unemployment Insurance Benefits are there to ensure you dont starve physically, the Benefits of Unemployment Insurance are available to make sure you do not starve emotionally. I now understand the names of all my kids teachers (there are very a few). I am aware what they each take for lunch and the dos and donts about their snacks. I understand names with the kids that bug them every day. I really know where their classrooms are and possess gone to every school performance that has taken place during the last year and 3 months. I cant remember ever spending just as much time with my wife while i have these past 15 months and you also understand what? I enjoy her. Sounds strange, right? We all love our spouses but do we really like them? I prefer meeting her for an afternoon mug of coffee, or meeting smack in the center of the day for some frozen yogurt in the mall. Weve even caught the matinee ( a lot cheaper you realize than during the evening hours or weekends) in the local theatre. After almost 26 numerous years of marriage I like getting together with my wife. I needed almost forgotten what which was like.

Now, dont get me wrong. Being unemployed, living week to week on a really small paycheck while facing a house foreclosure and never getting any bites in your job search, just isnt exactly Huxleys Brave New World. I do not wish this upon anyone (well that isnt entirely true because there are some people who I might wish this upon but that is for my next article called "How to Tame Your Enemies"). Unemployment is really as much a psychological hardship as it is an economic one. However, I can not change what exactly is. All Im able to control is how I react to the proverbial cards Im dealt. It would certainly be a crying shame if we lose home and need to apply for Food Stamps however it would be a much better shame if these trying times failed to have a positive impact on ones perspective on life to ensure that one at least tries to make that happen perfect balance between Unemployment Benefits and the Benefits of Unemployment.
